Reptile Awareness Day

Did you know that National Reptile Awareness Day is tomorrow (10-21-22)? 

Nebraska has 48 native species of reptiles! This includes snakes, lizards, and turtles. Reptiles provide many benefits to the ecosystem, such as rodent and insect control! This is helpful to farmers and homeowners alike!

Come celebrate National Reptile Awareness Day with us! We have several Reptile Ambassadors on site including a Nebraska native, the Black Rat Snake! We hope to see you tomorrow!

The Sweaty Beetle

The other day I got to talk to a wonderful young man who was very interested in our Creature Exhibits!

He was a little nervous but decided to hold one of our Blue Death Feigning Beetles. When we flipped that Beetle over we realized his hands were a little sweaty because the waxy coating that makes these beetles blue was missing down the back!

It was a great opportunity to show what happens when a BDF Beetle is exposed to moisture! What a funny and educational moment!
