What's That Sound?

The world around us is alive with sound! From the music streaming through the radio to the buzzing of a bumblebee, everything has its own voice. But why does a car engine sound different than a flute? Why does a parrot sound different than a bass guitar?

At its core, the answer is sound waves. Sound waves are produced when the air is disturbed by vibrations. These sound waves control the pitch, the high or low, of what you're hearing.
Okay, so why are some sounds loud and some sounds quiet? Answer: Sound waves again! The SIZE of the wave matters, too, for your brain to translate what your ears are hearing. The taller the waves, the louder the sound. The shorter the waves, the quieter the sound.
